ACT Therapy

What is ACT therapy?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of psychotherapy that helps individuals embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or feeling guilty for them. Unlike traditional cognitive behavioral therapy, ACT utilizes acceptance and mindfulness strategies mixed with commitment and behavior-change strategies to increase psychological flexibility.  


The core of ACT is to help individuals live a rich, full, and meaningful life, while effectively handling the pain that inevitably comes with it. It emphasizes accepting what is out of personal control and committing to actions that enrich one’s life.  

What can ACT therapy help with?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy has been extensively researched and shown to be effective in treating a variety of psychological challenges. Studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in managing conditions such as anxiety, depression, and stress. For example, a meta-analysis in the Journal of Clinical Psychology found that ACT significantly helps reduce anxiety and depression symptoms across a variety of populations.


ACT is particularly beneficial for those dealing with chronic pain or illness. ACT assists patients in accepting their condition and committing to behavioral changes that can improve their quality of life, despite ongoing physical discomfort.  


Furthermore, ACT has proven useful for individuals experiencing emotional distress or PTSD. A study in the Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science reports that ACT's focus on mindfulness and acceptance strategies helps improve emotional regulation and can reduce the symptoms of PTSD.


By teaching coping strategies that focus on acknowledging and accepting difficult emotions and fostering a compassionate self-understanding, ACT works by empowering individuals to lead more fulfilling lives.
